More electronic doodads: homebrew LCD display

This is an post from the olden days – read more about them here.

I built this thingy the other day…

It’s an LCD display the connects to your computer, and does all kinds of funky stuff. It can show what songs are playing in Winamp, and runs a spectrum analyser as well (the picture above)

So now I don’t need my monitor turned on to know what song is playing.

The program also has the capability to add pushbuttons or a remote control to it, so you don’t even need to use the keyboard. (I’ve already got a remote hooked up to mine before)

It takes a bit of mucking around though (you need to know how to solder stuff together) and you spend a while tinkering with the settings to get what you want. But it’s all free – the program is open-source, not the hardware – from http://www.markuszehnder.ch/projects/lcdplugin/

So now my computer acts just like an off-the-shelf CD player.

My desk needs a bit of a clean though…
