Looking back at the ‘Cavalcade of Transport’ mural

For decades the ‘Cavalcade of Transport’ mural was a landmark of the otherwise unremarkable main concourse at Spencer Street Station. So how did it come to be?

The forgotten mural at Melbourne Central station

For most rail passengers passing through Melbourne Central, their main point of access is the Swanston Street entrance – it connects directly to the main atrium of the adjacent shopping centre, and lead towards the largest number of tram connections. However if you take the Elizabeth Street entrance, you’ll find something different on the concourse.

Thousands of people pass through Melbourne’s Flagstaff railway station each day, but I doubt any of them notice the little used walkway tucked way on the upper level. So imagine my surprise last week when on my way home from work I discovered a keyboardist setup on the walkway, along with a few other musicians.

Why is there a keyboardist on the upper level concourse of Flagstaff Station?
